Medicine for tonsil stones… Sounds pretty great, right?

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could simply pop a pill and get rid of tonsil stones that easily?

If you’ve ever had to deal with tonsil stones, chances are you’ve wondered if there’s a magic pill or antibiotic that would get rid of them.

Unfortunately, the truth is that there’s no medicine that’s made specifically for getting rid of tonsil stones.

But don’t lose hope! There may still be a medicinal solution.

Medicine For Tonsil Stones

In order to figure out if there’s a medicinal solution to your tonsil stones, we first have to figure out what’s causing them in the first place

This can be a little difficult because the cause of tonsil stones varies greatly from individual to individual. Some are due to diet. Some are due to habits such as smoking or drinking alcohol.

But some are due to illnesses and/or allergies. This is where medicine may come in to help.

Here are couple of options…

Allergy/Cold/Flu/Congestion Medicine

Say you notice that you get tonsil stones when your allergies flare up or when you catch a cold. This likely means that your tonsil stones are due to excess mucus/post-nasal drip.

This makes sense as tonsil stones are partly made up of mucus.

So in the case that your tonsil stones are due to excess mucus/post-nasal drip, preventing the tonsil stones simply means getting your allergies or mucus production under control. This can be done using an allergy or cold/flu/congestion medicine.

This is a method that I’ve personally used, as I’ve noticed that my tonsil stones sometimes come in when I have excess mucus from allergies. It has been a successful trick for me.

Of course, you should not use this method if you aren’t actually dealing with allergies or illness.

Antibiotics

Antibiotics could work…

However, they usually aren’t recommended for getting rid of tonsil stones.

Although antibiotics may help by reducing the bacteria that’s causing them to form, the tonsil stones are likely to come back once you complete the course of antibiotics. In addition, there’s the possibility that they may not even work in the first place.

Unless your tonsil stones are caused by an illness or infection that can be cured by antibiotics, they simply won’t get to the root of the problem.

This makes antibiotics a very short term solution (if at all).

For these reasons, it’s probably best to avoid antibiotics if you’re trying to get rid of tonsil stones for the long term.

But if you think your tonsil stones are caused by illness or infection, consider talking to your doctor about taking antibiotics to get rid of the illness/infection (thus, getting rid of the tonsil stones as well).

If you simply cannot figure out what’s causing your tonsil stones, it may be because the bacteria in your mouth is imbalanced. In this case, oral health probiotics could potentially balance out the bacteria in your mouth to prevent tonsil stones from forming.

According to PDOSpecialists, The key to a healthy mouth is to keep the microbes in the mouth in harmony and the beneficial bacteria in the majority.

This can be done with the help of oral health probiotics (along with a healthy diet and lifestyle!). They work by introducing healthy bacteria to your mouth that is intended to improve oral health.

Although there’s no guarantee, oral heath probiotics have cured some people of tonsil stones.

Therabreath Products

Therabreath products are probably the closest thing you’ll get to “medicine” for tonsil stones!

Therabreath is a company started by Dr. Harold Katz. They make products specifically meant for getting rid of tonsil stones and creating the right mouth environment to avoid tonsil stones from forming.

Therabreath has dozens of products aimed at preventing/getting rid of tonsil stones such as oral rinses, toothpastes, serums, nasal drops, lozenges and more.

So, do they work?

The products tend to be a hit or miss depending on the person using them. While some people have completely gotten rid of tonsil stones using Therabreath products, others have found that it doesn’t work for them.

Personally, I love Therabreath. I’ve tried their “tonsil stone kits” multiple times and use many of their products to this day. However, I don’t solely rely on Therabreath for preventing tonsil stones.

If you’re interested in trying out Therabreath, I would recommend getting one of their Tonsil Stone Kits. The kits contain a variety of different products to try, so you’ll have a better chance of finding something that works for you.

Grapefruit Seed Extract

Grapefruit seed extract is often used as an alternative medicine!

Many people use grapefruit seed extract to successfully treat oral thrush, an infection that occurs in the mouth. The grapefruit seed extract works because it has powerful anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. Those anti-bacterial properties are what can help tonsil stone sufferers.

Here’s how to use grapefruit seed extract to treat tonsil stones:

Place a few drops of grapefruit seed extract into a cup of water and mix it together. Gargle the solution, being sure to tilt your head back so it hits your tonsils.

You may drink the solution instead if you’d like, but PLEASE make sure you use an ingestible grapefruit seed extract as some are not meant for consumption.

If you’d like to try a grapefruit seed extract that’s safe to consume, I would suggest this one:
